Hi everyone! My name is Makis Lam and I am a Grade 11 student at Markville Secondary School. Today, I had the pleasure to attend the National High School Conference. Here are my thoughts highlighting what I learned.
What did you learn about consulting, entrepreneurship, finance, or business in general from the conference?
I learned a lot today about being an accountant. I learned what they do, their importance, and most encouraging, their compensation. They certainly have an interesting job. They analyze numbers, and everything always has to add up in the end. This process can even be used in forensics as they can solve crimes through accounting.
What did you learn from the keynote speakers and post-secondary panel?
I learned that university is going to be hard but with a certain set of skills like communication, organization and others, it's not too bad.
What did you enjoy the most from NHBC?
I really enjoyed the case study competition and getting to solve a problem with my friends. Solving problems is so much fun and especially with this hard case of misusing company money, I learned a lot about how I might want to go about solving a case.
I also really enjoyed seeing my friends Jerry Wu and Aaron Guo do a great job at leading the NHBC conference. They are amazing students and it's great to see illuminate turn them into such hard-working, motivated, and innovative people. Jerry Wu and Aaron Guo are great and because they're with Illuminate, I know that Illuminate can help me be just like them.
How will you apply your learning in your future career goals and/or personal development?
I will keep attending conferences to learn more and to acquire more skills for the future.
